Before I get into “Mustard Gas” and tell you why it’ll make you want to check out its parent, album. I want to give a huge shoutout to DC-based producer Krohme’s label. It’s one with an incredible cause. Calm Bomb Collective is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit record label founded by Krohme. Its mission is to amplify voices within the Disabled, Autistic, and Neurodivergent communities. Calm Bomb Collective blends art with activism, creating platforms where marginalized creators can thrive and connect through music. As someone who falls into these categories, I’m here for it. It also helps that the song itself is lyrically insane, featuring Kurupt, Apathy and Bub Styles.
Featuring on Krohme’s Before the Animals Know You’re Dead project, which dropped today, “Mustard Gas” is, well, flames and explosive. It combines intricate raps that focus on two things. Those are proving lyrical superiority and sneaking a good deal of education in there amongst the BARS–err, stars. I find that the best hip-hop has the capability to educate without beating you senseless with obvious attempts. All this is done over a sound that’s a combination of heavy boombap drums and bass that THUMP, gritty vocal samples, and an overall feel that’s reminiscent of the old days. However, it still sounds fresh to hear in 2025, so it’s vintage but, at the same time, completely its own thing. Like I said, this one is one I’m here for in various ways.
Check out Krohme’s album (along with “Mustard Gas” and support dope music in all its forms.
