Romy Dya is back on SOTB with her latest song, “Cargo.” A sonic mix between Fantasia’s “Free Yourself” and Timberlake’s “Until the End of Time,” “Cargo” is simply beautiful. Romy here shows that being open to love is a difficult but ultimately rewarding thing. Vocally, she, like always, brings her A+ game to wrap the production up and envelop it with even more feeling and emotion. It’s a very honest song that doesn’t sugarcoat those “after the storm” feelings one has about love. It doesn’t even really stick to romantic love. Instead, it delves into various forms and various ways of healthy love (regardless if they are a bit scary) and details a bit of Dya’s healing process. Healing is never a quick fix, nor is it a one-and-done sort of thing. So while healing, we’ve got to treat ourselves (and request that we be treated gently) and with a lot of grace. Otherwise, you’re going to go nowhere.
It’s one that I empathize and relate heavily to. As someone who’s been hurt by people I’ve loved, it’s rough. If you don’t resolve that pain, you become someone who will hurt others with your twisted perception of what “love” is. Hurt people hurt people. That mindset is something I had to unlearn to have any success in the love department. I had to deal with my own drama and trauma before I could truly love anyone (and before I could truly be loved and not think it’s a lie). After all, situations will arise in our lives. To be smart about them is to properly address them and begin healing from them. When our fragile hearts are tended to, we grow, mature and find the will and ability to engage in love again. The story here isn’t a new one, but it’s one that everyone can take something from. And that, along with Romy Dya being the songstress she is, is something I’m always here for. I personally love the journey I’ve seen her on since I found her music.
