N3WYRKLA Contemplates a Drunken Hookup on “PLASTIC CUP”

I think that I’m boring and super washed (cooked?), y’all. I’ve never been the drunken hook-up and never the drunken hook-upper neither. I’m kind of boring. When I’m sipping, I’m usually already with the–ya know what, never mind. This isn’t about me, this is about the musical stylings of N3WYRKLA.

N3WYRKLA’s “PLASTIC CUP” is a song about the potential of hooking up with an old flame while off the drank. The old flame is, as you’d expect, someone she probably shouldn’t reconsider. But the drinks’ve been flowing, the mood’s kind of set, and the urge is there. Throughout the song, she ponders “should I slip and backslide or do I just go home and sleep it off?” The end result is somewhere in the middle. However, it definitely has that “it’s 2:36 AM and I’m feeling lonely kinda. u up?” nostalgia to it.

Sonically, it starts off a bit SZA-esque then turns into a trunk-rattling stripper song. That’s not a bad thing here, as it explains the entire vibe of the song. It’s sexy, but more in a “maybe I shouldn’t do this right here, right now” sort of way. It’s like a strip club is for some people. You probably shouldn’t, but it’s tempting to toss a few ones to the one you like. As I’ve been in such clubs myself (and worked sound once for like three minutes), the bass levels remind me of a song someone would perform to. It’s also got that smoky, “kickback in the basement” bass feel to it. The beat sets up the vocals, the vocals hit a home run for the lyrics and the lyrics will (hopefully) make you think hard before you call that ex. And those vocals? The way that harmonies are used here? It’s honestly very intoxicating.

N3WYRKLA is currently supporting FERG on his North American tour and prepping for her debut album. If it’s anything like this, it’s going to be the best kind of spicy. Check out “PLASTIC CUP” below and support dope music in all its forms.
