“Clocked,” the latest from singer/rapper/songwriter Alyssa Jane. On it, she collaborates with Boston composer/producer SV (her second time in the last calendar year). “Clocked” is one of those “you’ve gotta check this out” sorts of things. In other words, it’s a song that I’d post on SOTB regardless. It just so happens that this one is super dope.
With a combination of neo-soul vocals and boombap, the duo creates a cut that’s equally “we’re going to make it” and “we’re far from your average.” I absolutely love the mix between neo-soul and boombap, as it allows us to hear all of what Alyssa Jane has to offer as an artist. Synergistically speaking, you can tell that Jane and SV have worked together–especially from the way she fits on this instrumental (and the way SV crafted the beat to fit Alyssa’s bars and vocals). Vocally, Jane reminds me a bit of a mix between Erykah Badu and Sa-Roc. Her vocals shine effortlessly while the flow engages and grabs you because of the way that she demands your attention.
“Clocked” was released as a one-year anniversary of Alyssa and SV’s Neo Philly album, their first collaborative effort. I took a chance to listen to parts of that 8-track project. If you like the collaborative energy “Clocked” has, I recommend checking out Neo Philly. I also recommend adding “Clocked” itself to a playlist or two. It doesn’t pander to any audience and becomes its own thing. That thing is a song discussing the ever-evolving ways of the world–both musically and humanly speaking–and how we have to keep pushing regardless. As long as we have the will and the drive, we won’t be clocked out by life lifing–even at its worse. Sorry for the pun, but it fits.
Check out “Clocked” above and support dope music in all its forms.
