JUNii Teams with Kaelin Ellis for “jinx!/weplayedthegame”

JUNii is a Detroit-born artist who blends the relatable, highly honest nature of a DOECHII with the general swagger and flow of an artist from a forgone era. Specifically, JUNii reminds me of artists like Missy Elliott. The way that JUNii bounces over parts of this two-part track definitely brings Misdemeanor to mind.

However, it’s not just an approximation of those now-legendary sounds, my friends. While JUNii has her Timbo-adjacent producer in the ever-game Kaelin Ellis, she also manages to make the overall vibe her own thing. She does so mainly with her intonations and flow. It’s reminiscent of Missy–but it’s not JUNii parroting Missy in any way. You can relate to this two-song suite like a DOECHII, SZA or Summer Walker. However, JUNii has more of a Detroit flavor to the whole thing versus down south or out west. In doing it all with more of a Detroit lean, we get two halves of a song that have undeniable soul behind them. You’ve also got a collective song that has the grit and determination that Detroit is famous for. It’s not completely shined down to a smooth edge. There’s still an incredible amount of bite in JUNii’s flows and songs. I wanted to point that out because there are artists who’ll pay homage and completely try to “become” the artist. It usually doesn’t work, at least not for me.

Overall, the track is one that’ll play and pair well with “I’m that MFer”-types of vibes/songs/playlists. It has some discussions on the way these games people play can affect people’s psyches. But it also has a great deal of pro-self-elevation vibes. Check it all out below and support dope music in all its forms.
