The grind never stops. That’s not to say “give into the grind and grind yourself to nothing.” For me, that phrase means “the world keeps moving, even if I stop.” Even if I say “F this, I’m out,” the rest of the universe continues. It’s as if God tells you “don’t forget you’re just a human. So continue on, my child.” As such, you end up having two options to handle the grind. Either you:
- A. roll with it and move how and when you need to or
- B. you get stuck inside your head and stagnate yourself.
On “Guess Who’s Back,” Haitian-descended, NYC-born and Atlanta-residing artist Poetic Junior opts to succeed and bring about opulence for himself and his team. He’s got a Cole meets “Dreams and Nightmares” Meek feel to him, lyrically and flow-wise. If that’s your ultimate jam, then you’re in luck. Everyone else, you too are lucky because “Guess” is a piece that forces you to be better.
In going for that aforementioned “option A” mindset, his song is a rally cry to those who want more. It’s not opulence just for the sheer hell of being gaudy or outlandish, though. No, Poetic here discusses opulence and wins as necessities in life, things we should all strive for. I’m here for that mentality. Granted, we don’t all have caviar dreams. Even so, we’ve all got something we want a lot of (be it money, love, peace of mind, material things, etc.). Strictly speaking, “Guess Who’s Back” is a boombap-centric anthem for us underdogs out here trying to make a way. The song’s also for anyone who’s questioned giving up, only to realize that giving up causes more harm than continuing. If you’ve ever fallen down or felt less than, this one tells you to pick yourself up, mourn for a second to take that loss in, then get back on the grind.
Again, I’m not a “hustle or die” type of guy. The hustle moves continuously. I don’t always have to move with it. However, I realize that if I don’t move at some point, I get stuck in mediocrity. Mediocrity is sometimes worse than straight-up failing. IYKYK. Check out “Guess Who’s Back” above and support dope music in all its forms.
