Miami group RasPunk hit my inbox with their latest, a cover of Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine.” The group blends their modern take on dub reggae, punk and a few other regional and global styles to create their fusion sound. Hailing from various parts of the world, mainly South and Central America (keyboardist/vocalist Gabriel “Militant” Benitez is from Spain), the four-person group aims to create a unique sound for its fans.
The cover of “Ain’t No Sunshine” is smooth, but it also sounds unlike most versions of the song. It’s got a distinct reggae-like feel to it, sonically speaking. However, it also has an edge that makes it stand out among the various covers. The best parallel I can think of is DMX’s version/interpolation, in that it’s a cover in the traditional sense. But the cover eventually evolves into its own thing. RasPunk’s version plays less just to a goodbye to love. It plays as a farewell to arms for many a person, thing, even aspect of social media. It can also act as a farewell to an old self, one that may have been a bit more than you should’ve handled. It’s that unconventional nature which makes this song one you should, at least, give a listen.
