If you know me, you know that I love the Christmas season. In fact, I’ve recently become one of those people who starts prepping for the holiday right after Halloween. Thanksgiving is cool, but it doesn’t have anything on walking in a winter wonderland. I think it has something to do with my mom being a super Christmas nerd and putting her decorations up right before Thanksgiving.
With that in mind, Liz Vice’s rendition of “Deck the Halls” puts me in a great tree-decorating sort of mood. It’s funky and soulful while just being a good song in the vein of, in some ways, an Al Green song from his heyday. The Motown-meets-Christmas vibes here are awesome and take me back to my childhood where my mother would wear the vinyl off the Jackson 5 Christmas album or the Motown Christmas compilations. Man, I can almost smell the pine and envision the Christmas decorations while “Give Love on Christmas Day” blares from my mom’s record player.
Nostalgia aside, the song is a great take on a classic. It takes what we know, turns it on its head a bit and funks it up into something new and special. If you’re like me and you’re in the Christmas spirit, check out the track below and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
