I believe that some of the best music I’ve featured on SOTB has been the music that comes from the soul, regardless the approach that’s given to get that soulful vibe. NYC artist Shon Weathers’ “PLAYER 1” gives listeners a lot of soul and realism. He discusses his frustrations with music and the world, but also shows that he’s going to keep pushing regardless of the hurdles that may present themselves to him. He’s got a real Cole feel to him, down to the way he sing-raps at points on the song. If you’re a Cole fan, I think you’ll like this one. However, it’s still distinct enough that it doesn’t feel like he’s just stealing Cole’s mannerisms to make a hit song.
“PLAYER 1” has an interesting cover art to it as well, featuring a still shot of an NBA game between the Warriors and Bulls, seemingly after a Steph Curry shot. Everyone who knows me knows I’m a huge Curry fan, so anything referencing him grabs my attention. This one grabbed my attention because, like Curry, Weathers aims and fires at his goals with precision. Check out the track below and support dope music in all its forms.
