Sargeant X Comrade Present “Call You Back”

The soulful duo of Sargeant (lyrics and vocals) and Comrade (instrumentation) are a duo of excellence. I’d never heard of either before a week or two ago. However, if “Call You Back” is any indication, this won’t be the last time I hear from them.

Sonically, it reminds me of an Erykah Badu or Jill Scott song, even down to the cadences with which Sargeant sings. That’s not a bad thing, at all, because she also makes the song her own in a way that’s best described as “imagine Billie Holiday and Ms. Badu having a jam session in 1990s Harlem.” That’s to say that it’s a pretty dang great introduction and a pretty damn good song.
