I usually pass on featuring covers on SOTB. It’s not that I don’t like covers. In fact, it’s mainly because there are other, busier sites that do so. However, I couldn’t pass on Micah Willis’ “If Dreams Were Money.” That’s because it’s a song that puts new school with older school to create something smooth and emotionally-deep. Conceptually, it’s about the struggle of being a dreamer in a pretty harshly realistic world. We want the world, but the world sometimes wants to hide itself from us. I also just love the instrumentation here; it’s the highest point of a song with a lot of them. Willis also shows that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, as he’s the son of blues musician Kenny Neal. That gives Willis’ cover of labelmate Bruce Marshall’s song a bit more oomph than a typical cover. If you’re intrigued (which I’d hope you are), check out the track below and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
