Adanna Duru Presents “if i was a boy”

From the jump, Nigerian-American artist Adanna Duru grabbed my attention with lines such as “If I was a boy, I’d swing my [eggplant] around…I’d never go down South…I’d always let you down.” The song plays like Beyonce’s “If I Were a Boy” with a 2020s bite to its lyrics. It’s a playful-but-still-quite-serious look at the way men (specifically those F-boys who think they’re God’s gift to women) treat their partners. However, the lyrical content delves deeper than just saying “[ninjas] ain’t sh*t.” It’s because it puts the F-boys in their partner’s position while making sure that these guys know that they’re screwing up–and big-time. I really love the bouncy instrumental, produced by two SZA vets in Khris Riddick Tynes and Rob Bisel. That duo of creatives produced recent SZA tracks “Snooze” (Tynes) and “Kill Bill” (Bisel), so you know that things are going to be both tongue-in-cheek and brutally honest. I also loved how the song combined alt-R&B, afrobeat, a healthy dose of snark and sarcasm and lovely harmonies to make listeners need what Duru’s putting down here. If you’re intrigued, I recommend checking this one out, looking out for Nappy Hour II (Duru’s upcoming EP) and doing the SOTB thing by supporting dope music in all its forms.
