Proclaim Battles His Reflection on “Look Here”

Sometimes, we are our own worst enemies. As someone who struggled with depression and self-esteem issues as a kid (product of my environment, amirite), I know this all too well. On “Look Here,” rapper Proclaim lets it be known that he’s been through some things. However, they’ve shaped him and made him realize his power and worth. While those intrusive thoughts can still manifest themselves, it gets easier to deal with them.

How, you ask?

For me, it took me learning to allow myself to feel bad/sad/angry about a miscue or a mishap (as those are valid emotions). After learning this, I began taking inventory of the various wins in my life—even in the face of constant failure. Finally, I remember that God doesn’t make junk and, when things look bleak, I’m still in control of my own destiny. I feel that Proclaim does that on “Here,” even if he doesn’t go full SOTB and divulge every single skeleton, emotion and so on. I think that him being a bit more subdued works in his favor as it makes things easier to process. In other words, he doesn’t run the risk of scaring newer people off right off the bat with an “open book, open Speed, open always” philosophy.

Nevertheless, the song is one that has a lot of heart and will make you realize that you’re still awesome—even when your reflection gets intrusive and begins thinking otherwise. Check out the song above and support dope music in all its forms.
