The art of a vintage jazz-meets-soul-meets-contemporary R&B-like “I’m a great catch, so join me in ecstasy” song can be considered a slightly lost artform–specifically in the mainstream. It feels like, since Amy Winehouse passed, the sound has gone back underground for the most part. Sure, you’ll get an Adele or a Victoria Monet. However, the sound dominated R&B in a sense in the early-to-mid 2000s. That said, I love when an artist–regardless of race, age, gender, etc.–revisits those vibes. And that, SOTB Faithful, is what we get on Sir Woman’s two latest tracks.
Sonically, the duo of songs have that 1970s R&B feel to them. They feel very warm, like a vinyl recording, but also very vibrant like a modern R&B piece. Personally, that’s what grabbed me about these–the production on the two songs. It feels like Sir is speaking right to you while she speaks on love and lovers. Everything about “Who You Gonna Love” and “Never Gonna Give Me Up” feels incredibly intimate, but not overly sexual. That’s a difficult line to avoid crossing, especially with how sensual SW’s vocals are here. They could easily be taken as just “smooth Poundtown vibes” but her vocals and the maturity behind her lyrics keeps things from getting too raunchy. If you want to see what I mean, what are you waiting for?
