Joey Supratta and Deante’ Hitchcock are Very “Blessed” on New Cut

Now, I know I’m not a “model” Christian. I cuss, I (used to/occasionally) drink, I have had my share of premarital relations and so on. TMI aside, I do know one thing, even though I’m not the “ideal.” That is, even when life’s moments aren’t going the best, I take solace in the fact that God has blessed me with a lot. “God’s got me” is a phrase I’ve lived by for as an adult. It’s one that keeps me going as things get crazy and chaotic. That leads me into the focus of this piece.

On “Blessed,” the duo of Joey Supratta and Deante’ Hitchcock give praise and glory to the Most High, while also reminding listeners that life is what one makes it. Yes, it’s a cliched phrase but one that is true every time. Here, Joey and Deante’ reflect on their lives thus far and discuss their wins and losses. I love the honesty that each artist comes with on this track, as it helps to further get the point across that God does, indeed, have us. Sometimes, you need a reminder of that and that’s what “Blessed” does.

What really grabbed me about “Blessed,” aside from its message, is the production. It’s soulful and it’s powerful. In fact, the beat kind of reminds me of a mix between Dilla with the boombap and Maybach Music-type beats, circa 2011-2015, with the way the melodies come together. The bass knocks like your typical trunk-knocker, but the melodies and other instrumentation is very mellow and tranquil. It allows for deep thinking and moments where listeners may/should themselves thank God. I also like that this song doesn’t beat God into its listeners; it’s more of a dual testimony to God’s Glory. I’m here for that type of worship. It’s easier to captivate and motivate by sharing experiences and not pressing the issue to the point of awkwardness.
