My DAR compatriot True God used to talk to me, halfway joking, about doing a project where he’s singing more than anything–kind of getting his Little Brother on while making some pantydroppers at the same damn time. The Love EP, released on Black Friday, accomplishes this.
True opts to rap here and there, but this is more an EP that drips R&B sensibilities. And it works. I found myself immersed in the soul True put into this one. He croons about love, experiencing it, falling into it (sometimes against his better judgment) and just wanting more of it. True’s always been an artist who’ll bear everything about him on a track. We’ve known that since his 2012 project DOA. However, things feel different here, as if he’s embracing more of the positive energy around him and putting it out through music. It’s also a refreshing take on a rapper-who-sings project, as True can actually sing without studio magic. I guess those days of goofing around at Roland Park really paid off for all of us.
