On Thursday’s episode of The Speed Report (below), I talked a bit about dub versus sub and Persona 5 “hyperfans.” Ultimately, I’m not a dub or sub snob. I look at it like this. If I was a dub snob, I would’ve missed out on JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure until its dub hit (which means I would’ve just finished Golden Wind). Inversely, if I was a sub snob, I would’ve missed out on great voice acting from people such as Steve Blum. And a life without Steve Blum’s voice in anime is a life I don’t want.
On the topic of Persona 5 fanatics, I pleaded with them to stop putting Phantom Thief concepts out into the real world (especially when the characters in P5 and P5R wanted people to think for themselves and just give the courage to those who lacked it). Don’t get me wrong, I love P5, but it’s fiction. The False Igor makes you sign a contract acknowledging this. There’s absolutely no need to say the Phantom Thieves are coming to punish Donald Trump or Smash Bros. players who engage in terrible real-life things. You can protest the inequities and ignorance in the world without pulling fiction (well-crafted or otherwise) into the mix.
I mean, there’s enough fake news as is.
