While Angels Ova East is still on the way, Que leaked tew new (“two new,” for the uninitiated) Chris Cassius songs yesterday. “Song Cry” and “Long Arms” are, in a word, amazing. Now, y’all know me: I’ll rock with anything Chris comes up with since the brother is dope as hell. These two tracks, though? They take him to another level. While “Song Cry” is a soulful flip produced by Goodboy, “Long Arms” is boombap at its finest with a menacing Vlad-produced piano melody. The great thing about Cassius is that he sounds good on anything he hops on, from trap rap to boombap. That’s the sign of a great artist, one who has longevity draped over them like a cape.
If you had to put me at gunpoint to choose my favorite of the two, I’d probably be losing some blood right about now. That’s because both tracks are strong and let you into Cassius’s mind. “Song Cry” is emotional and lyrical, while “Long Arms” is just gritty boombap vibes personified. Additionally, his delivery is smooth while also still having some menace attached to it. They’re two solid tracks that, if you aren’t yet familiar with Cassius’s body of work, will serve as an introduction to the Baltimore rhymesayer. Check them out above and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
