KILLERMAGE hit my line with “DOOM” a few weeks ago. It’s an abrasive rap track that devolves into crunchy bass and trip-hop sensibilities before recomposing itself into a solid–but still in-your-face–introduction from the Russia-residing rapper. It comes off, minus the insanely intricate lyricism, like something MF DOOM would’ve created in the early 2000s, in that it’s hip-hop AF but still unique enough that you can’t really box it in.
It’s, for me, one of those tracks that’ll require several listens before you fully see what KILLERMAGE is going for on “DOOM.” At first, I was a bit unsure about posting on the site because of its abrasive nature. Then, after several more listens, I determined it fit well within the SOTB aesthetic. Sonically, it reminds me of a bit of DOOM mixed with JPEGMAFIA with a bit of Ehiorobo and Death Grips for good measure.
It’s not cut-and-paste rap, that’s for sure. However, it’s still a great listen.
