Over a sample of The Ethics’ “Lost in a Lonely World,” Lance Markeith’s “Ethics” is a four-minute-long discussion. What’s discussed is simple. Markeith talks about what it means to stay focused when the world seems destined to bring you down. In a world where people always question motives and distrust even the most-authentic of people, “Ethics” is all about staying true to yourself, regardless the consequences. I respect the message given, but I also believe the song itself is a great one.
It definitely helps that the sample’s chop brings to mind Big KRIT’s “American Rap Star,” a song where KRIT also discusses staying true to oneself. I believe Markeith’s take on the topic would’ve been strong without the sample. That said, the sample helps bring the point out that much more.
