Want an aesthetically-pleasing alt-R&B song about someone who’s at their wit’s end, but still has the will to keep going, keep pushing and keep living? If you’re like me, you probably like that sort of thing. And because of that, I’m sharing it with you–because I think that’s what Tobias Defoe’s getting at on “Highlife.”
A track that brings to mind Weeknd and Frank Ocean, “Highlife” is a bit experimental but never goes off the rails in its attempts to get its point across. In fact, it actually becomes a bit subdued in its grandiose nature at points. As Defoe himself says, this one is for those “who [are] struggling with their present lives and [are] searching for some sense of optimism and meaning.” Sonically, it also reminds me a bit, as Defoe mentioned himself, of Rocky’s “LSD.” Check it out below and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
