On “MOM,” The Black Abstract Pays Tribute to His Grandmother

To lose someone who’s been a positive motivating force in your life, it hurts. It’s one of those things that you don’t ever really recover completely from. You just learn to live with the new truth and accept it, growing from the experience. When I lost Mama Young back in 2015, it made me, for the most part, change my life and do better. In The Black Abstract’s case, his grandmother is to his family what Mama Young is to mine.

On “MOM,” the Buffalo artist speaks his truths and the truths of his family when it comes to his grandmother. After all, the matriarch of a family deserves all of her flowers, whether she’s still alive on this plane or not. Over a very soulful beat (produced by iLL Tone Beats), “MOM” displays a bunch of vulnerability and a healthy dose of TBA’s usual bravado as well. It’s that mix that helps me understand how much his grandmother meant to him, kind of like how I’ve been on songs saying, in so many words, “Mama Young would beat my ass for XYZ.”

Check out the powerful visuals below and remember to support dope music in all its forms. And, as always, be sure to give people their flowers.
