Okay, I admit it. I’m a few days late on this one, even though it’s still “MAYYYYYYY!!!” And yes, I had to make reference to the classic meme. Jokes aside, the homie Lex Rush hit me with her take on the NSYNC track “It’s Gonna Be Me.” A track that’s slated to feature on a mixtape which showcases her versatility over Max Martin instrumentals, “Not Gonna Be You” is, in a word, stunning.
Rush’s flow and bars fit pretty well over the late-90s/early-2000s pop-R&B production. Additionally, the beat gives Rush another layer of “oomph.” It’s like Kendrick Lamar hopping on the “Bad Blood” remix levels of dope to me. That’s because it’s something you don’t expect, but is welcomed all the same, mainly because it’s something different from the artists in question. The visualizer features dancing robots (androids?). The visualization meshes well with the original track’s vibes and Rush’s take on it because, robots are often controlled by a string of data and Rush lets it be known she’s not another cog in the machine.
