Rachel Geek Speaks on Her Plight on “Species”

Rachel Geek is, in her words, “her own Wizard of Oz.” What that means is that she manages to produce, write, sing, rap and mix and master all of her own content. Given that I’m also a jack-of-all-trades, I had to give her a listen. Us “do-most-of-it-all-by-ourselves” types have to stick together, ya know?

I’m glad I did, because “Species” is a special song, one that apparently came together during a manic episode (been there). The track details the thought processes of someone who deals with mental health issues and crises on a daily basis (also been there). It’s an alternative rap offering that’s buoyed by a melancholy guitar throughout the song and a laidback-but-still-aggressive flow about the subject matter. In other words, if you’re lucky enough to not deal with manic episodes, this song will give you insight into what it’s like. It can be some scary stuff, but can harness some great creative energies. That is, when you’re able to focus, hone in and not go through self-destructive behaviors (also been there as well).

Check out the track and visuals above and support dope music in all its forms. Also, and I think it goes without saying at this point, check in on your friends and family. Sometimes, we’re not all that fine and it helps.
