On “Shroom Trip,” Chaz French Bares All

A song that’s equal parts “lemme rap my soul” and “I’ve grown a lot since my past days,” Chaz French gives us everything he can on “Shroom Trip.” Sonically, we find French channeling J. Cole with sang-rap vocals about his past, his time at Motown and how that impacted him moving forward. I’ve been signed (albeit to an indie label back in high school), so I empathize with French’s trip through Motown. Sometimes, labels don’t know what to do with you. At least French didn’t have to diss his label to get released from his contract. Instead, the song’s about personal growth and the motivation he has as an artist, post-label and beyond.
