This was legitimately the first song I came across in my submissions after hearing about Dugee F. Buller’s untimely passing. I needed something to help keep my mind off the fact that one of my brothers wasn’t here anymore. eli feier’s “Faith Over Fear” finds the young artist blending a variety of genres together to tell his story, while also telling his listeners to live within their own truths.
As a Black queer artist, eli has seen a few sides of the industry (and society) and how both sometimes treat marginalized people. On this one, he lets it be known that he’s not going to hide who he is and will be a light for those who seek it. You’re probably wondering how this song relates to keeping my mind off Dugee’s passing/how it relates to Dugee at all. While he and eli are different from each other, their confidence and ability to connect with people helps them and their music stand up, perhaps even against the rest of time. Sonically, I like that the sound of “Faith” is something like serpentwithfeet meets Anderson.Paak with a dash of trap production and delivery at points.
