RANI Presents “Candy Store”

Amsterdam-based singer/songwriter RANI’s “Candy Store” reminds me of a mix between Ari Lennox and Janelle Monae. That’s to say it’s a bit playful and sensual, but also preaches a healthy dose of “I know I’m the ish,” which is greatly appreciated. What else is greatly appreciated is that the song doesn’t fall victim to a slew of cliches. The song is “the autobiographical tale of a love interest who gave her all the signs he liked her, but wanting to remain on her guard, she played hard to get to see what his intentions were.” I’m here for this sort of energy, if only because it creates compelling storytelling.
