Above is the latest from Baltimore alternative duo Bex & Bright (it’ll be appearing on other DSPs in a little while. “Memo” is a genre-blending/genre-bending song that “breaks traditional gender norms in mainstream rap…[and] challenging expectations by showcasing female-driven rap leads and lyrics.” Taking cues from alt-pop, alt-R&B, underground hip-hop and other subgenres, “Memo” takes the idea of a male rapper rapping and a woman singing and inverts it. Featuring Justis Channel and GD Ambidextrous, this is one that you should just chill out and listen to. It’s got a lot to say. What makes this one even more powerful is this: they don’t claim to be the first to do this, but they are one group who’s done it well here. Check out the track via Soundcloud above, on other DSPs/music purchase sites if you really like it and support dope music in all its forms.
