Aiza Presents “Majimbo”

A mix between hip-hop, R&B and Afropop, “Majimbo” is a fun tribute to viral star Elsa Majimbo. What it does well is that it’s infectious, lyrical and it makes you feel good and want to dance. It also is a song that connects Majimbo’s growth as a viral star to AIZA and her own journey in music (and the lives of others who may hear the song). I love the East African love here and the shoutout. I also love that this song, like Aiza said, “make[s] you feel like the main character” while also “[turning sidewalks] into fashion runway[s].” The track also features Kweku of Ghana on vocals towards the end of the song, which adds another element to an already jam-packed positive vibe.

I’m always here for positive energy in my music. I like the dark and brooding stuff, too. However, I really like when artists have fun, big up their contemporaries and elevate their cultures. Each of those things is present in this song. The bassline on this song mixed with Afropop sounds is a thing of beauty. As I wrote about the song, I started doing a bit of a dance in my chair. If you can get me, a “dancer” who “retired” from dancing (and no, that’s not a euphemism for me being a stripper)? You’ve got my attention and my ears.

Aiza, who’s been compared to Lizzo and Janelle Monae, is quite literally a master at her craft after the several years she’s put into it. She’s conscious without beating you over the head, fun without being goofy and has a great grasp on what she wants to do as an artist. She wants to unite while breaking chains. Meanwhile, she still want to have fun while still elevating those around here in her culture.
