Ok, maybe people were a bit too eager to call this kid a gimmicky white guy who sounds like Weeknd and Jon B had a baby who got on by approximating older black culture tropes. Or maybe they weren’t. I don’t really know. Either way, and it may get some ire from the peanut gallery, this song was an example of insane beauty. It went from typical Spooky Black vibes (super muted production and vocals, rambling-like lyrics, etc.) to “Holy hell, this kid just left it all out there.” It’s not a track that’s for everyone, but it’s a huge step-up from his earlier tracks in terms of experimentation.
