(Not A) SOTBMusic Review: @JColeNC – 4 Your Eyez Only

As with Gambino’s Awaken, My Love, I will not review 4 Your Eyez Only, the newest project from J. Cole, in a traditional sense. I’m not going to say “oh, check it” or “oh, trash it.” It’s a “polarizing” project in some ways. It’s like your typical Cole album. Instead, it takes things to another level with its production experimentation (not just soulful samples play throughout the project) and the way that Cole’s playing around with his vocals.

He’s not full-out Gambino-ing it, but there’s definitely more of a Coloring Book feel on the project than, say, just bars off the top from top to bottom (especially some of the singing aspects on tracks such as “She’s Mine Pt. 1”). It’s a very subdued album in a lot of ways, too. It’s intimate and very chill in its production, bars, and everything. Dream-like, in some regards. So, from that, but I can see why some folks are saying “oh, it’s putting me to sleep.” It’s intentionally dreamy and intimate, I’d like to think, but it’s beautifully done and gives us some amazing stories. Anyway, I’ll shut up and let you stream 4 Your Eyez Only below.
