I’m not going to review Big Sean’s I Decided. album in the traditional sense. At least not now. I’ve been a strong opponent to knee-jerk reactions to albums from critics for a minute. Even my “300 Words or Less” reviews took into account multiple listens, so, again, I leave first listen reviews to other folks. No hate, just my opinion. But, with that said…after a few streams through of this project, I’ve got one thing to say.
The album goes in. And here are some reasons why. So, I guess this is kind of a regular review, but then not.
While Sean still kind of lacks with his singing (it’s getting there, though), his bars have never been as clear and concise as they are on this project. He takes the introspective lyrics and topics he’s utilized since Dark Sky Paradise and ups the ante on them. Plus, he’s able to stand with Eminem now and not get completely bowled over. Even as Eminem ages, that’s still a solid accomplishment. Highlights, for me, include “Halfway Off The Balcony,” “Bigger Than Me,” the Migos-featuring “Sacrifices,” and (of course) “Bounce Back.”
It’s one of those projects that has something for everyone. However, be that as it may, it still manages to be a highly personal piece of work. Additionally, it’s emotional without wallowing in self-pity and self-appreciating without being annoyingly braggy. For these reasons, I Decided. is a must-listen if you’ve ever been interested in Big Sean.
Check it out above and remember: even though I love giving you my opinions on music, it ultimately all boils down to how/if you rock with it.
