Say what you will about Big Sean–because Lord knows people could say a few things about him (whether or not many of them are true is another story). Two things you can’t say are that he doesn’t pay homage to the greats and that he doesn’t get into his bag best when he spits emotional raps.
On his latest track, “Deep Reverence,” the Detroit rhymesayer does both. He speaks on his life over the past few years while also giving us a Nipsey Hussle verse. The song, which is slated for Sean’s Detroit 2, peels back the boisterous appearance we’re used to hearing from Sean on his singles and chunks of his albums. Instead, we get to see the man behind the music. Through this track, Sean speaks on how Nipsey’s death had an effect on him, how he had more personal losses and how he’s still standing in the face of adversity.
He raps that, even through his mental health concerns, his losses and his failures, “God’s a good author” when it comes his life story. All things considered, I can’t say Sean’s telling a lie here. Even when it doesn’t seem like it, we’re blessed to live the lives we live. Could they be better? Sure, why not? Even still, we’re still blessed to have the opportunity to live them. Check out the track below and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
