One of the tags on FinagoBaby’s Butter mixtape is “Carter II.” So, with that in mind, my ears were prepared for a mixtape that really made me take notice of the Baltimore native’s approach. What I got was something that definitely made me keep an ear open for the entirety of the project. Butter features production from young, rising Baltimore producers Benjamin Banger, tyepacino, talk2nobody, as well as Finago himself (such as the soulful “March 26, Bloom St”). Each producer’s touch adds a different attitude to the project, but it still sounds distinctly Baltimore.
Lyrically, you’re given a lot of “I’ve gotta/gonna make it because I’m me” bars. That’s not a bad thing, but they don’t completely help distinguish Finago from the crowd. What does, however, is his wordplay and honesty. Just like Wayne’s classic album, we’re given, even among the “I’m different, look at me” bars, an honest look at the 25-year-old artist and his work ethic and lifestyle. It’s not all guns and butter, it’s not all hoes and cars, there’s a big variety in there. And because of that variety, I’ve got to give this one an SOTBMusic stamp of approval. Check it out below and support dope music in all its forms. You never know who’s going to show up and change what you’re listening to.
As an added bonus, check out FinagoBaby’s “Uber Everywhere” freestyle from last year.
