When I first came across the above video, I was thinking it’d be a reference to MLB superstar Mike Trout and have a lot of baseball analogies. While I love a good baseball rap track (heck, I’ve got on on TSL2 featuring True), Death by Tapioca’s “OLT” is nothing like that. Instead, we get a track that features the artist summoning Mac Miller-esque vibes to give a laid back “I’m here, but I’m gonna make it my way” sort of song. The hook is simple, but lends itself well to singalongs and potentially performances in front of an audience.
The thing that really captured my attention were the animated visuals. I like that they feel kind of like something you’d see on [adult swim], but aren’t overly trippy. Instead, they’re thoroughly detailed without going overboard and that adds to the mellowness of the song. If you take that, add that into a chill beat and catchy but still somewhat introspective lyrics, you’ve got a track that fits well into the overall SOTB aesthetic. Check out the visual above and the song on DSPs below and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
