We’ve all been there. We’re in the early stages of a relationship and our potential other half comes with some out-of-the-blue, semi-outlandish requests of us. What happens usually is that we’ll cut our losses, move on and talk to our friends about “that one crazy ex” who was great at a lot of things but wouldn’t bend on others–which caused us not to bend back. It’s a tale as old as time.
That said, there are times where we end things and, for one reason or another, hope there’s still the chance of a friendship there. Why? Well, because love is a drug and you don’t want to lose the person completely.
That’s the basis of “FRIEND” by ULTRAVIOLETENVY. Over a chopped sample and a Rhodes piano, ENVY raps about a relationship that ended because he couldn’t bend to the whims of his partner. He still wants the friendship, though, because his ex doesn’t seem to be that out there; she’s just high-maintenance AF. This sounds a bit like a CMIYGL outtake in some ways, down to the chop of the beat. Check it out below and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
