Zeyi Presents Closer

On a boombap-friendly beat, rapper Zeyi tells us how and why he’s getting closer to his dreams and making them a reality. I love the production on this one, as well as Zeyi’s laidback flow with a lot of multisyllabic rhymes. He kind of reminds me of a mix between Cole’s earlier stuff (read: Mixtape Cole), Wale at his most-introspective and Vince Staples. That said, he’s able to make this mesh of flows and energies distinctly his own and make something that’s representative of him, not his influences. He makes it known that the last thing he’s going to do, while he’s reaching for his dreams, is fold. I’m here for that type of energy. I mean, I did have a song called “Never Fail” this year, so I’m definitely for people standing their (musical) ground and blowing up on their own terms.

I feel that the “I’m going to make it, whether you like it or support me” vibes I get from this one, they make it that much stronger. It’s a solid song on its own, but when you add in the “eff you, I’m getting mine” energy Zeyi presents on here? Everything blends together well, like a chai latte for the soul (and the boombap-hungry listeners out there). Odd comparisons aside, this is one you should listen to if you’re in the mood for some throwback conscious hip-hop. Check out the track above and remember to support dope music in all its forms. You never know when you’ll find someone as close to their dreams as you are to yours.
