Well, damn. That’s the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear “BSE” from Roqy Tyraid: “well, damn.” That’s more so because of the fact that the Phoenix rapper supreme decided to make a turn-up song while presenting a doubletime flow and lyrics for days. This is why we do this: for good-ass music that’s equally a bop as it is a history lesson and a lyrical tirade with a purpose. Said purpose is more than just “I’m better than you.” Roqy decides to detail his life story, his rap career and his successes while still eviscerating opponents on the gritty boombap beat.
The video is equally impressive. It’s minimalist as hell, which works out as you’re more focused on what Roqy’s spitting about than just taking in the mise-en-scene of Phoenix (which does feature prominently as well). Shot in B&W, “BSE” took me back to the days of The Box and calling in to request the latest DMX track. Or at least it did for me. This one is a solid track, one that’ll get you to pay attention to Roqy’s lyricism and flow like no other.
