Baltimore-based artist Faded Flex has started off 2022 with some bangers. The rookie rhymesayer has impressed me with his mix between conscious hip-hop and modern mainstream sensibilities. Truth be told, he may end up being my rookie of the year if he keeps this up. His latest track finds him employing the DMV trap flow in a way that’s both embracing of it and also a bit spoofy.
“Crypto” is one of those tracks that’ll get stuck in your head because it’s catchy AF, but also has some solid wordplay and barred-up moments. The visuals continue Flex’s vibes from “Johns Hopkins,” as do the actual lyricism. His featured artist, fellow Baltimorean Earl From Yonder, drops an impressive and somewhat experimental verse. I’m a huge fan of the visuals, as they’re engaging but also a mix between mainstream and abstract hip-hop. Overall, the song is great and fun.
