The name Cindy Zhang reached my ears a few months back with her take on “Plastic Love.” I didn’t write about it, but I recently revisited it. Granted, it was after hearing the original in a GOSHI Towel commercial which featured Akane Tendo (copyrights be damned, amirite). Better late than never, for sure.
Crazy marketing gimmicks aside, “Plastic Love” is a beautiful Japanese funk soul track from Mariya Takeuchi that Zhang covered. The song’s crazy popular, reaching “Careless Whisper” levels of buzz in the late-2010s; there’s even been a fair share of English covers. Anyway, before I go down the rabbit hole (any further), Zhang’s version was equally awesome and even a bit playful while being bittersweet at the same time. It’s kind of like the original and its danceability–which brings us to “Wednesday” on this beautiful Wednesday afternoon.
“Wednesday” is a lot more cheerful than her “Plastic Love” cover as it finds the singer/songwriter counting down the hours until she can see her special someone. It’s that (non)plastic love that makes life that much sweeter. Trust me, I’ve been there and you’re just giddy with anticipation, waiting until your work day’s over and you can see your beau. Zhang’s got some beautiful vocals and, backed by a funky accompaniment, she shines very brightly here. Like her “Plastic Love” cover, she awesomely walks the line between throwback vibes and contemporary sounds, between city pop and modern R&B. Check out “Wednesday” below (hopefully we get a visual for it soon) from the Bay Area-native and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
