Jill Valentyne’s Latest is a Journey Through Mental Health

Gary, Indiana-born, Phoenix-based artist Jill Valentyne’s “Don’t Lose Your Shit” is one of those songs that’s a self-help mantra while being a bop at the same damn time. A smooth jam, backed by a guitar-heavy beat, “DLYS” is a track that deals with mental health and anger. Sometimes, we get angry. It’s human nature. People can’t be happy all the damn time. However, we shouldn’t let these anger-inducing moments cause us to lose our religion/lose our shit and spaz out on someone. Those moments damn sure shouldn’t get us to the point we’re about to take someone’s life.

Essentially, she’s saying that you’re in control of your destiny–and your mental health. No one else is but you is responsible for you, so you know what you need to do to keep yourself in control. Be it walking away, working out, relaxing with a glass of wine–whatever it is that keeps you from snapping on someone, do that. I like that this song isn’t straight-up doom and gloom when it comes to mental health. Instead, it’s got a bit of humor attached, which seems to be Valentyne’s MO (putting humor and darker situations together and having it work). Check out the song above and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
