Between anime references (specifically Cowboy Bebop), storytelling that’s Wu-inspired and a smooth-but-slightly-ominous beat, Newark, NJ artist Zero McGurker grabbed my attention. In fact, because of those things, he managed to keep me intrigued throughout the solid “Tales of Newark.” The overall vibe of the song is gritty and tells the story of a man who got caught up in some wild ish and the consequences of his ways. It reminds me of something Ghostface Killah would’ve dropped. That is, it tells the story of a man who’s living grimy but gets hemmed up because of his actions. Overall, the song hits you right in the chest with blazing lyricism and, again, some storytelling that’s epic in its approach and concise in its delivery.
If you’re in the mood for some lyrically-impressive storytelling today, I think you should check this one out and remember to support dope music in all its forms. You never know when you’ll find your next favorite storyteller.
