I think I know what some of you’re thinking. “Speed’s talking about drug rap now? The world’s over.” Though bars about utilizing substances have their place in hip-hop, that’s not what we’re on right now.
Instead, this is the title track of C.Shreve the Professor’s return to music after a year off to recollect and refocus himself. Must Be The Drugs features raps from Shreve and beats from frequent collaborator DRUGS Beats. The title track brings to mind folks like KRIT and Spitta in its smoothness and lyrical aptitude. In other words, if you need lyrics that cut quick over beats that’ll have you moving in slow-motion over how incredible they sound, check this one out.
This is an A/B side release, with the B-side being the equally fire “Dragon Luck.” “Dragon Luck” is a bit more introspective and boombappy than “MBTD.” However, it’s still an incredible song, one that lets people see where Shreve stands as a man and artist. I’m a huge fan of the piano melody DRUGS rolls out here, as there’re few things that get my attention like boombap with sick piano melodies. If there would’ve been a guitar solo randomly, I probably would’ve been in music nirvana by now, transcendent over everything we see here. Thankfully for you, I’m here to tell you that these two songs are amazing.
Check them out above and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
