A mix between boombap production and bedroom pop melodies that seem borrowed from the TLC era of R&B, Katie Ladubz’s “Hearts” is a simple song. It’s about the object of Katie’s affection and how this love is a bit complicated. It’s complicated because the two people involved in the relationship, Ladubz and her partner, have an intricate love. This sort of love is pretty engrossing and they (Ladubz especially) wonder if it’s the best way to go about things. However, love wins–even when you lose a bit of yourself. I think that’s the moral of this one: that love can be one of those things that removes some of your self-awareness and personal identity. That said, it’s up to you to make that a good thing or one that’s a bit more tragic. Even though it becomes harder for Ladubz to see what her partner in love wants, they both know that the alternative (of being apart) isn’t better than trying to figure out their truths together.
