The final single from Fatlip and Blu’s Live From the End of the World, Vol. 1 is called “Hollywood Celebrity.” In a few words, it’s like a mix between Nate Dogg-aided hip-hop from the past and boombap lo-fi hip-hop (minus the aesthetic some people classify as lo-fi in the 2020s). In a few more, Blu and Fatlip give us bars on top of bars about trying to stay true to oneself in the face of pop culture reigning supreme in some arenas. Plus, Bilal’s always welcome around these parts because he’s a legend.
So what happens when three legends in their own rights get together? You get this sort of collaboration, and let me tell you: it’s so damn good. Lyrically, it’s good. Beat-wise, it’s good. Subject-wise, it’ll provoke a lot of thoughts and discussion. In other words, it’s the type of track I look for when writing for SOTB. End of the World is due out on Friday, so if you’ve felt the singles thus far, check it out and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
