Utilizing a rapid fire flow, the collective known as UglyFace talk about a lot of topics on “Promo.” Mainly, they discuss some of the things that’ve come their way as their growth as artists—and their growth in an audience—has continued over the last few months and years. I am a huge fan of the production, as it’s like a mix between thumping anthem and mid-2010s West Coast alt-rap.
Sonically, imagine a combination of Lupe rapping over a mix of production that sounds like Drake’s “Headlines” meets Cole’s soulful production with a bit of The Cool Kids in there as well. It’s a blend that is eclectic, but powerful. It gets its point across without seeming over-the-top or holier than thou. Instead, we get a track that also speaks on the dangers of fame (finding energy vampires and new lovers who, while they’re freaky, aren’t the best for you).
That’s just the way I like my music: electric, eclectic and emotionally moving. In other words, this is a song I have no choice but to recommend. Check it out below, peep the group’s EP on your favorite DSP and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
