On “Better Me,” mickey jas Channels Mac and a Touch of Frank Ocean

Multihyphenated artist mickey jas’ latest song, “Better Me,” finds the Baltimore native speaking on wanting to get better while also accepting himself and all that means. Sonically, it reminds me of Mac vocally and Frank Ocean lyrically. It’s soulful and beautiful, but also has a touch of poppy melancholy attached to it.

Beat-wise, it’s like a mix between infectious boombap and bombastic pop records. In other words, think Dilla meets pre-Silk Sonic Bruno Mars on the beat. Plus, the song is relatable to just about everyone. I mean, who hasn’t wanted to become better for themselves and those they surround themselves with. This is the second (!!!) release from mickey, the first being March’s “Angel Child.” If that duology of songs is any indication, mickey’s aiming to be here for a long time, not just a good time.
