Fresh Kils is a Toronto-based, Juno nominated producer and engineer. He also acknowledges that he’s a guest in hip-hop, so he doesn’t try to tell Black and POC artists how to do their rap jobs. He strives to “earn his due in the space,” and has the resume to back that up. Enter lyricist pHoenix Pagliacci who steps onto this thumping beat from Fresh and rips it (while even offering up a few vocals).
The track is a celebration of independence and a declaration of it as well, with Pagliacci saying that she’s the sole “author and creator of [her] destiny.” I’m here for this energy, especially because the bars are FIRE. Plus, we are all the only people who can make ourselves great. No one’s co-sign can replace the hard work it takes to actually get that co-sign. This is the second single from Fresh’s upcoming Disclaimer album, due out on November 25th. If it’s anything like this, I’ll be tuned in for sure.
