I’d never heard of reptilelegit before stumbling across the title track to her Cloud19 album. Based on what I’ve gathered over the last few hours, she’s a pretty well-known person in gaming circles and is part of that (very) late-2010s/current alt-rap wave. That said, the title track grabbed me and I wanted to hear more. At the end of the project, I felt like I understood reptilelegit a lot better. The album’s like a cynical-yet-somewhat-optimistic look at the world through the eyes of a young adult. It also speaks on what it’s like to be a young adult in the 2020s.
In its approach, it blends hip-hop, pop, lo-fi, synthwave and a slew of other subgenres to make its sound. The resulting sound is quite unique; it reminds me of if Billie Eilish would’ve hopped on and rapped/sang over beats produced by someone who grew up on Dilla and The Weeknd. It’s some, sometimes, trippy-ass sh*t.
It’s eclectic as hell, but that’s what helps it stand out. It’s that eclectic nature that allows for any one of the ten songs from Cloud19 to get stuck in your head and make you question everything you ever knew. I know, it sounds like hyperbole. However, anytime you can make this mid-ranged millennial take notice and start streaming your album? I give props where props are due, and this one deserves props.
