I feel this one in my soul, as UK singer/songwriter Sekou and I have something in common. We both, for better or worse, had pretty crap relationships with our fathers growing up. That, of course, colors what people like us see as “good” from themselves and other male role models. I, like Sekou, chose to be nothing like my father; I’m active in my children’s lives, I show them love in ways outside of buying things and I’m just there for them.
Now, back to “Better Man.”
The song is poignant and powerful. The acoustic nature of the song just makes you feel all of the feels (sorry, but it’s damn true). When I tell you the rawness of this song had a lump in my throat, I mean it. This song is definitely one you should experience–even if your relationship with your father is/was okay to excellent.
